Hypnotherapy is thought of as lying on a couch, eyes closed, with colourful circles fast approaching. Your life is so stressful and very busy; every second is filled with meetings, deadlines and high status projects.
Growing up, you decided to become a career woman before a mum. However, as you start to get a little older, your fancy car, beautiful home and high profile career is simply no longer enough.
You long for the touch and warmth that comes with holding your beautiful baby in your arms. You have always been a go-getter, you know that you are good at what you do, but you question yourself as to whether you have what it takes to be a good mum.
You become desperate for a baby, but you are struggling to conceive and are becoming frustrated with the reoccurring negative result, on yet another home pregnancy kit.
You question yourself…
“What could be hindering my ability to conceive? Are you infertile, is it your age or could it be that stress factor?”
Stress is a terrible thing, it is poison in the body that can affect it so severely that the body becomes weak and ill, it impacts one’s appearance as well as the proper and healthy functioning’s of the internal organs.
This includes your ability to conceive and start a family of your own. It is believed that if you are stressed about your ability to be a good parent, it can negatively influence your ability to have a baby.
If your stress levels are elevated about becoming a mum, being pregnant or giving birth, hypnotherapy is said to help reduce stress and improve your chances of becoming pregnant.
How can hypnotherapy help you to conceive?
As a woman, it is constantly reinforced that we need to be maternal and have the natural ability to be a good and caring mum.
Many women become stressed at trying to live up to the perfect mum/wife image.
They are afraid they will disappoint or worse, fail their unborn child. The stress that this constant worry and pressure brings can cause psychological and emotional blocks, which can then lead to fertility problems.
These blocks can be present in your conscious and subconscious.
According to Doctor Christiane Northrup, these are some of the stresses that could be causing your infertility:
- Concerned about being pregnant
- Giving birth
- Scared of hospitals
- Losing your independence
- How will a baby affect your career
- Your ability to be a good mum
- Changes your body will endure
- Whether you are ready to be someone else’s mum and life support
- Worried about following in the same dysfunctional footsteps as your parents
- How will a baby affect your relationship or marriage
- Living up to high expectations
Pinpointing what is causing your inability to fall pregnant is a big step that takes great courage and involves deep souls searching.
However, now that you know what is causing your infertility, you need to figure out how you can mend and improve the above mentioned fears and concerns?
This is where hypnosis comes in.
Benefits of Hypnotherapy and Conception
Once the emotional or psychological block has been identified and accepted, using hypnosis will allow you to deal with these stresses and effectively start your journey of motherhood.
Northrup says that “Hypnotherapy is a highly effective mind-body technique which helps individuals identify and process subconscious blocks that may be interfering with conception”.
During this type of therapy, both the patient and the hypnotherapist will work together, to bring positive attitudes and emotions regarding motherhood, labour and children.
The more knowledge the patient has with regards to conception and parenting, the more effective the changes within the body are.
This means that the more confident and at ease the mum to be is, the more positive the changes in the immune, reproductive and endocrine systems will be.
Hypnotherapy includes stress reduction, visualisation, meditation, mind-body healing, energy work and working through and acknowledging issues that are preventing conception.
Hypnosis is also used when there is no medical explanation for your inability to fall pregnant.
How does Hypnosis Work?
Doctor Elizabeth Muir says that hypnosis affects the hypothalamus, which is the neural centre at the base of the brain.
This is linked to the pituitary gland and it controls the flow of hormones in the body. The hypothalamus is particularly sensitive to stress and it converts the emotional into the physical.
In other words, the hypothalamus turns the emotional responses or feelings into physical responses that affects the hormone levels in the body.
Negative emotional responses can hinder the healthy balance of hormones that are responsible for ovulation and sperm production.
MakingBabies.co.uk says that hypnotherapy is best described as a process where a woman becomes finely tuned with her body and her ability to have a baby.
It is a tool that is used to change and deal with some of the insecurities and worries you have about starting a family and all that goes with it.
Hypnosis works by using the Alpha State, which is a natural brainwave pattern. During the Alpha State, you are very much awake, but you are deeply relaxed which means you are less critical of yourself.
During this relaxed state you can work on mending your thoughts and behaviours that limit your ability to have children.
Hypnosis can also be used for the following:
- Giving birth and labour
- Eliminates fear
- Eases pain during labour
- Babies in complicated birthing positions can be turned using hypnosis
- Blood pressure, heart rate and temperature can be lowered by using hypnosis
